What is Whop? A plain-language explanation

Whop is a US commerce platform where anyone can sell access to digital things — courses, paid Discord and chat communities, software, files, coaching, alert feeds — through a hosted storefront and checkout. It charges no monthly fee and takes 2.7% + $0.30 on each domestic card sale. Sellers get a dashboard, payouts to 200+ countries and an optional listing on the Whop marketplace, which Whop says has 22M+ monthly active users.

If you searched "what is whop" you may have meant the dictionary word (to hit or beat soundly). This page is about Whop, Inc., the company at whop.com, founded in 2020 and headquartered in New York.

What Whop actually is

Think of it as three products that share one account:

  1. A storefront and checkout. You create a "whop" — a product page with a price, a billing cycle (one-off, monthly, yearly, payment plan) and whatever the buyer gets: a Discord role, a course, a download, a chat room, a licence key, a booking link. Whop hosts the page, takes the card, handles taxes if you ask it to, and sends you the money.
  2. A marketplace. Sellers can list their whop on whop.com/discover, where buyers browse by category and read reviews tied to real purchases. Listing is free; there is no separate marketplace commission on the current fee schedule.
  3. A payments and payouts layer (Whop Network). Underneath the consumer product is the infrastructure Whop sells to larger businesses: embedded checkout, payment orchestration, 100+ local payment methods, affiliate payouts, cards and invoicing. Whop says 27,000+ businesses use it and that sellers earned $300M+ in the last month.

Who uses it

The marketplace skews toward money-adjacent niches: trading alert groups, sports betting picks, reselling ("cook") groups, ecommerce and dropshipping courses, clipping/UGC programs that pay creators for views, and coaching. Our sister review sites track more than 300 live Whop communities across those categories, and the typical seller is a solo operator or a small team charging $20–$300 a month for access. On the network side Whop lists Polymarket, Kalshi, Cal.com and Replit among its customers.

What it costs

$10$0.575.7%$9.43
$50$1.653.3%$48.35
$200$5.702.85%$194.30

That is the base rate for domestic cards. International cards add 1.5%, currency conversion adds 1%, and there are optional add-ons for billing automation, orchestration and managed tax. The full fee page lists all of them with the source for each.

What it is not

  • Not a get-rich scheme. The "Whop makes you money" videos are made by people selling a course on the marketplace. Whop is a till, not an audience.
  • Not a merchant of record by default. Unlike Paddle, Gumroad or Lemon Squeezy, Whop does not automatically become the legal seller for tax purposes. It offers a managed tax service at 2% per transaction if you want it to collect and remit. Details.
  • Not only for Discord. Discord gating was the original use case and is still the most common, but courses, downloads, software and chat communities run natively inside Whop's own app.

Frequently asked questions

Is Whop a legitimate platform?

Yes. Whop, Inc. is a real US company with published pricing, documentation, a Wikipedia entry and a $200M Series C. Complaints exist — mostly about payout holds and verification — and we cover them on the legitimacy page.

How does Whop make money?

Primarily from the 2.7% + $0.30 processing fee on every sale, plus optional add-ons (billing 0.5%, orchestration 0.8%, managed tax 2%, affiliate processing 1.25%), payout fees for instant or wire methods, and advertising sold to businesses.

What can I sell on Whop?

Digital products and access: paid communities (Discord, Telegram or Whop chat), courses, downloadable files, software and licence keys, coaching and calls, alert feeds, and "content rewards" programs. Physical goods are not the focus. Full list with examples.

Does Whop actually make you money?

Only if you have something people will pay for and a way to reach them. Whop supplies checkout, payouts and a marketplace listing; it does not supply customers. Treat the marketplace as a bonus, not a traffic source.

Is Whop free?

Opening an account and listing products is free. Whop earns only when you sell: 2.7% + $0.30 per domestic card transaction.
